Haiti - Security : Index of Peace, Haiti ahead the USA and the Dominican Republic

The 12th edition of the World Peace Index (GPI), produced by the Institute for the Economy and Peace (IEP), an international think-tank, reveals that the world is less peaceful today than any other time in the last ten years.

Let's clarify that the GPI is the most comprehensive study to date on Peace trends, economic value and how to develop peaceful societies. The report covers 99.7% of the world's population and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources to compile the index. These indicators are grouped into three key areas: the security level of society; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization.

In this 2018 index, Haiti ranks 88th out of 163 countries, down 5 places from the 2017 index. The IEP explains that their research is aimed at helping countries understand the complex dynamics of peace and to provide the world with a road map for creating a more peaceful future.

The most peaceful countries by index are Iceland, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark. Canada is the highest ranked country in the Americas (6) while the United States is 121st.

Ranking of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean :

Chile (28), Uruguay (37), Costa Rica (40), Panama (50), Argentina (66), Nicaragua (68), Peru (74), Ecuador (75), Paraguay (77), Cuba (81) , Trinidad and Tobago (84), Haiti (88), Jamaica (90), Dominican Republic (91), (119 in 2017), Bolivia (94), Brazil (106), Guatemala (111), El Salvador (116), Honduras (118), Mexico (140), Venezuela (143) and Colombia (145).

The report stresses that the greatest challenge to peace in Central America and the Caribbean is crime and corruption.
