Haiti - Politic : High-level mission of ECOSOC in the country

A delegation of high-level ambassadors, members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC-AHAG) Ad Hoc Advisory Group, is on mission in Haiti from May 7 to 10 to assess the country's socio-economic situation, discuss priorities and develop its next recommendations on Haiti's long-term development.

In a meeting with President Jovenel Moïse the delegation discussed the socio-economic situation and inquired about the long-term priorities for the country's development. "Political stability, the fight against corruption, the strengthening of the rule of law and the alignment of technical and financial partners with government priorities are essential for the revival of productive investments, peace and the country's sustainable development," said President Moïse to ECOSOC members.

"The rule of law is essential for Haitian-led economic development," said Marc-André Blanchard, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, who heads the delegation in Haiti, adding "To achieve the country's ambitions, the international community must continue to strongly support national priorities," emphasizing the importance of coordinated action among all development partners for maximum effectiveness.

During his stay, the Group will meet with Haitian authorities, including senior officials of the judiciary, parliamentarians, local authorities, representatives of civil society, the United Nations Country Team and the United Nations Mission in Haiti. support for justice in Haiti (Minujusth), as well as private sector leaders to discuss progress and challenges in achieving sustainable development.

The Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti will submit to the Economic and Social Council a report on its work, including recommendations, at its coordination and management meeting in July 2018.

The delegation is composed at the level of the ambassadors of Canada (President), Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Benin, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Spain, United States of America, France, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and the Czech Republic as former President and member of ECOSOC.
