Haiti - FLASH : Record of remittances from the Haitian diaspora

According to the World Bank's latest briefing note, remittances from the diaspora to Haiti in 2017 reached a record level of US $ 2.4 billion, or ± 29% of Haiti's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and more than 25% of the state budget.

Note that for the last twenty years, remittances to Haiti have always been increasing. Remember that it was in 2006, that the first billion dollars of remittances was reached and exceeded.

Top 5 diaspora transfers to Haiti (in US dollars) :

1 - United States: more than 1.4 billion;

2 - Dominican Republic: 566 million;

3 - France: 149 million;

4 - Canada: 144 million;

5 - Bahamas: 58 million.

The World Bank warns that long-term growth in remittances is likely to be threatened by the tightening of immigration policies in many of the countries behind these transfers.

By way of comparison, the Dominican Republic received in 2017, 6.2 billion dollars from its diaspora, with however less dependence than Haiti, since these remittances represent only 8.3% of the Dominican GDP.
