Haiti - USA : Inauguration of the new pediatric unit of HUJ (Cap-Haitien)

Tuesday at the Justinian University Hospital (HUJ) in Cap Haitien, the US Ambassador to Haiti, Michèle J. Sison, attended in the presence of Mrs. Marie Greta Roy Clément, the Minister of Public Health at the inauguration of the new pediatric unit reconstructed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In her speech, Ambassador Sion said "[...] With the support of USAID and through PEPFAR, we are inaugurating today a new space that includes rooms that can accommodate newborns, infants, young children and adolescents, as well as examination, triage and isolation rooms for communicable diseases. "

"This inauguration highlights the ongoing partnership between the American people and the Haitian people to provide high-quality health services to all Haitians [...] The new pediatric unit of the Justinian University Hospital will provide care to patients presenting urgent cases to the children of Cap-Haïtien and let's hope it for the whole of the North Department," added the American Ambassador.

Remember that the Justinian University Hospital is the main health center of the second largest city in the country and serves the majority of the population of the North Department. The new building is designed to accommodate 80 beds and treat 250 patients a day, allowing hospital staff to better assist the 825,000 citizens of the area. This construction quadruples the size of the old unit, which had deteriorated after decades of service.

"Thanks to the increased investments of the Haitian government in the fight against mortality in newborns and infants through the Essential Package of Services, this pediatric unit will now allow many more pregnant women to give birth safely with the help from a qualified team.

That is why we thank the Haitian government for its commitment to strengthen the investment of the US government in providing these spaces with the best Haitian medical professionals and the necessary equipment to effectively serve patients," concluded Ambassador Sison.
