Haiti - Tourism : Towards the valorization of the Aquatic and Underwater Heritage of Haiti
Colombe Émilie Jessy Menos the Minister of Tourism accompanied by her advisers held a working session at the beginning of the week with a delegation of the organization "Haiti Ocean Project" represented by Mrs. Jamie Aquino who was accompanied by Jean Daniel Lafontant of the "Haitian Cultural Foundation" and youth from the commune of Petite Rivière de Nippes, members of this organization.
"Haiti Ocean Project" is a specialized organization, observing and promoting endemic species such as whales, dolphins and sea turtles living in Haitian waters. This organization also works in the training and awareness of the young people, fishermen and residents of the commune of Petite Rivière de Nippes on the tourism potential of the marine ecosystem and the employment opportunities that this sector can generate.
It was agreed that the Ministry of Tourism, "Haiti Ocean Project" and the Ministry of the Environment will work to establish a sanctuary that presupposes the delimitation of a maritime area starting from the Gulf of Gonâve up to to Jérémie via Grand Goâve and Petite Rivière de Nippes.
"This public-private partnership should include fishermen and professionals working in the tourism sector," Minister Ménos said. She pointed out that trades such as "Marine Biologists, Underwater Photographers and Archaeologists, Rescue Diver, Tourist Guide with Specialization in Marine Ecosystem are all disciplines that are not taught in the country but that according to the Minister should be part of the partnership so that young Haitians can better know the wealth of their heritage and promote and safeguard it.
