Haiti - Bahamas : 201 Haitian boat-people intercepted and repatriated to the country

Wednesday, 201 Haitian boat-people were repatriated to Haiti by the US Coast Guard, after two overcrowded boats were intercepted near the Bahamas.

On Sunday, a Jayhawk MH-60 helicopter from the Coast Guard spotted a 50-foot boat east of Great Inagua Island. The 86 Haitian boat-people were taken care of by the Tahoma cutter of the Coast Guard.

On Monday, Tahoma recovered 115 more Haitians aboard an overloaded sailboat, about 3 miles east of yesterday's interception.

The migrants received food, water and medical care from the Coast Guard.

"The waters of the Caribbean and Florida Straits are dangerous and unforgiving for migrants on illegal voyages, in overloaded vessels with little or no safety gear, needlessly placing lives at risk," stressed Rear Adm. Peter Brown, commander of Coast Guard 7th District. "The Coast Guard and its partner agencies continue to maintain a strong presence along our maritime border and will continue to interdict and rescue those who embark on these illegal and ill-advised voyages in these unsafe vessels.'
