The Emptying of latrines of the Cholera Treatment Centres (CTC) and the treatment of excreta has Become a major health problem across the country.

In Leogane, two sites for the discharge of excreta and solid waste are needed. The authorities (DINEPA, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Environment), are not present in the department to discuss of this problem. In Jacmel, Jérémie and other cities, the situation in the Cholera Treatment Centres is critical because of the lack of sanitation practices.

In Leogane WASH launched a working group to define appropriate standards for the construction of latrines and excreta management in the region. A document will be prepared to define the problem, propose solutions and seek support near the authorities.

The threat of closure of the site of Truitier that occurred last week is resolved, at least temporarily. This week the situation of the dump site of excreta of Truitier, located in the municipality of Cité Soleil, evolved towards a solution consisting of an agreement for the reopening during 2 months, between SMCRS, DINEPA and World Vision International. This agreement includes among others, the support for the surrounding population (distribution of chlorine, soap and awareness campaigns).

The situation of latrines in the CTC in many departments across the country is critical and requires immediate action. In Jacmel, Jeremie, Léogâne and other cities, the emptying of the CTC must emerge as a priority.

The construction of new discharge sites of excreta in Titanyen continues to be blocked because of litigation over entitlement of construction with the owner. A temporary solution is being proposed to establish a new site near Morne à Cabris.
