On Sunday, the US Coast Guard repatriated to Haiti 67 Haitian boat-people intercepted about 51 kilometers north-east of Turtle Island (Haiti's north coast).

According to the Coast Guard, nearly 200 Haitians have tried to emigrate illegally to the United States by sea since 1 October.

From October 2017 to September 2017, 1,869 Haitian immigrants attempted to illegally reach US shores by sea. Captain Jason Ryan of the 7th Coast Guard District reminded those attempting to sail to the US that "the Caribbean and the Florida Straits are dangerous and ruthless for migrants who travel illegally in overcrowded boats..."
