Haiti - Jacmel : Carnival factor in the Spread of Cholera ? 05/02/2011 12:41:19
Dr. Yves Gaston Deslouches Junior, departmental Director of Health in the South-East expressed concern about a possible spread of cholera during the Carnival of Jacmel. In an interview with local press, the number one of the health institution in the region, said that the carnival events are likely to increase the number of cholera cases if people do not continue to apply the principles of hygiene during the moments of romping. In addition, the departmental Director stated that the rate of people with cholera, decreases in the region because of the positive results of awareness activities by local authorities and NGOs on the ground. "We currently have about thirty people with cholera, who receive care for this past week, at the Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) of the hospital Saint Michel" said Dr. Deslouches. In addition, he announced the temporary suspension of the second CTC which was set up by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) at Aviation [a locality of the city]. This measure is being taken because of the decline of the epidemic. However, he wished to clarify that all equipment and staff of CTC are available in case of any increase in the disease.
