Haiti - Humanitarian : More than 8,000 farming households benefited from seed assistance

As part of the project "Rehabilitation and strengthening the livelihoods of farm households affected by Hurricane Matthew in the South and South-East departments", funded the European Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and the General Directorate of Civil Protection and implemented jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization "Alianza por la Solidaridad", 8,083 households in the commune of Côtes-de-Fer, Bainet and Chardonnières, received seed and cuttings support for the summer and fall 2017 crop seasons.

For the 2017 summer crop year, 4,000 households selected from the most vulnerable each received 500 sweetpotato cuttings and 300 cassava cuttings. They will harvest at least 400 kg of tubers (cassava and sweet potato) on a staggered basis. In addition, they received 10 kg of bean seed, and / or 5 kg of native pea seed, as well as 5 kg of maize seed. If agro-ecological conditions remain good, this seed assistance will allow each household to harvest about 100 kg of legumes (beans or peas) 3 months after sowing.

This seed assistance was accompanied by theoretical and practical training for 300 "leaders" of Community Based Organizations on good agricultural practices that are resilient to climate change. The latter are committed to replicating the knowledge acquired in the neighboring communities, through practical demonstrations in their plots.

This support provided by FAO in order to boost the agricultural production of vulnerable households came in addition to the financial assistance (cash transfer) received from the Organization "Alianza por la Solidaridad", which allowed them to buy food for a period of 4 months before harvests https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21071-haiti-agriculture-nearly-3-million-euros-in-aid-to-households-in-the-south-and-south-east.html

Wilson Fenelon, Labiche's CASEC, 2nd communal section of Côtes-de-Fer declared "The distribution of seeds carried out during the summer and autonomous campaign, is very beneficial for farmers. The seeds distributed are of good quality. The productivity of the plots of the beneficiaries can testify to this. Farmers needed this support tremendously, which encourages them to work harder. They can already hope to make a good harvest."
