Haiti - FLASH : Haitian citizens must now pay a tax to get out of Haiti

Max Rudolph Saint-Albin Minister of the Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT), in a circular note bearing the signature of Fednel Monchery the Director General of MICT and Joseph Cianciulli Director of Immigration, Joseph Cianciulli, Director of the Directorate Immigration and Emigration, announced the new boarding pass tariff, effective November 2017, at all border crossings across the country.

Since the beginning of November 2017, all Haitians, whether they are from the diaspora or living in Haiti, have to pay a tax of 200 gourdes each time they leave the country. An announces that on social networks aroused for a week reproaches, anger and misunderstanding as to the soundness and the use of this tax by the Government Moïse-Lafontant.

Wanting to defuse the grumbling, Albert Moléon, the Coordinator of the Bureau of communication of the MICT recalls that this tax "is an old provision [of the former Minister Ardouin Zéphirin dating from 2015] which was reviewed," nd which had never been applied under the Presidency of Martelly.

For foreigners the landing card amounts to seven US dollars.
