Haiti - Social : 3.000 Haitians repatriated since early January

Sigfrido Pared Perez, Director of the Dominican immigration revealed yesterday that "since the beginning of the year, 3.000 undocumented Haitians were repatriated to their country of origin" stating that the situation on the border with Haiti remains calm and there is no abnormal tension...

The Dominican Republic has again increased its troops and agents of the Immigration and continues to strengthen its immigration controls and tracking down smugglers [Haitians and Dominicans] who exploit our countrymen through organized networks.

He also said that his institution was seeking primarily to fight against the illegal entry at the border and not the Haitians who live for a long time in the Dominican Republic in a regular situation.

He has avoided to talk about ; the "raids" of undocumented Haitians, refugees in the border cities, of the controls reinforced the army on public and private transport on roads, of the operations in bus terminals and toll stations, and the numerous interventions of paper verification, in Santo Domingo, Santiago and in the cities of tourist areas, both in North, South, East and West...

Sign of continuing tensions between Haiti and the Dominican population, the official urged the population of Santiago (particularly affected by mass immigration) to cease to have a threatening attitude towards the Haitians, and let the immigration authorities to act. Representatives of several neighborhood councils of Santiago confirmed to have arrived at an agreement with immigration officials, according to which the illegal Haitians will not be persecuted by the public until February 27 to give authorities the time to resolve the situation themselves. These perspectives are bleak for our fellow citizens, while in Haiti the situation is deteriorating day by day.
