Haiti - Security : The police sometimes work in miserable and dilapidated premises...

Following visits to several national police stations and sub-police stations, the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) draws a rather bleak picture of the situation and is appalled by the miserable working conditions in which our Policemen, sometimes housed in dilapidated buildings, with dirty walls and rainbow roofs. On an open letter to Senator Nenel Cassy, Chairman of the "Economy and Finance" Commission, which is currently analyzing the next budget, the RNDDH draws up a non-exhaustive list of its observations and recommends him that the budget be adjusted in order to make it possible to renovate, restore and equip the necessary police stations and sub-police stations.

Excerpts from the RNDDH Observations :

Police station of Port-ou-Prince :

"Housed in a dilapidated building severely damaged by the earthquake of 2010, the Police station of Port-au-Prince is not able to meet the needs of the population. Moreover, the part which housed the body of fire-fighters is now abandoned."

Police station of Petit-Goâve :

"Since the earthquake of 2010, the condition of the building housing Petit-Goâve police station leaves something to be desired: the walls are cracked and the sanitary block is dysfunctional."

Sub Police station of Delmas 3 :

"Located at a lower level than the road linking Delmas and Pétion-ville, the Delmas 3 sub-station is visible only to the people used to frequent it. In addition, without a sanitary block, the building housing this sub station is covered by a pierced roof and has two very narrow chambers which constitute the office of the person in charge and the head of the post. An impassable space when it rains."

Police station of Port-Margot and of Maïssade :

"In the departments of the north and the center, the police stations of Port-Margot and Maissade, burnt down for a few years, have not since been restored or repaired."

Sub Police station of Saint-Charles and of Bicentenaire :

"Housed in two small rooms, constituting both the office of the Head and the office of the Chief of Post, the sub-stations of St. Charles and that of Bicentenaire each have a nauseous and sordid sanitary block. In the rainy season the building housing the sub-police station of Bicentenaire becomes very difficult to access."
