Haiti - Agriculture : FAO trains 32 agricultural processors

As part of the implementation of the EU-funded project "Improving Food Security in the Northeast", the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), carried out a training workshop in the commune of Ouanaminthe for 32 members of Champs Ecoles Paysan (CEP) (from the communes of Ouanaminthe, Fort Liberté, Férrier and Capotille, in the department of North East of Haiti), specializing in the processing and marketing of agricultural products.

This training enabled the participants to discover different ways of making their agricultural processing and marketing activities more profitable in order to better orient the choice of valorization of these products. Participants learned, for example, how to use sesame, groundnut, coconut, herring and garlic in the manufacture of cassava products, thereby not only increasing the margin benefit from their activities, but also improve the nutritional quality of cassava.

Paul Juvena, CEP Facilitator "Men anpil, chay pa lou", specializing in manioc processing, expressed his satisfaction after having participated in this three-day training in management and organizational strengthening. "This training has helped me make better calculations of expenses and revenues to increase my profit margins."

Abundant in the same direction Gisèle Adrien, a member of the CEP "Fanm Vanyan" of the locality of Cana, said "With this training, we feel better equipped to make a better management and marketing of our agricultural products processing. Now we are able to calculate production costs, revenue as well as profit margin generated. We will use this knowledge to maximize our profits and make better choices."

This training was also aimed at helping the members of the Champs Écoles Paysan to organize themselves in order to better value dairy products, "maraîchers" and those derived from cassava and groundnuts. Participants gained knowledge that will enable them to better manage and take into account the monetary value of the workforce involved in the manufacturing and marketing of derivatives.
