Haiti - Spain : Works blocked, unacceptable !

Within the framework of the strategy to fight against cholera, it remains essential to ensure adequate treatment of residues associated with this epidemic. The National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) has begun building the first, wastewater treatment plant (station d’épuration) of the country with funding from the Spanish Government for an amount of $2 million in the locality of Titanyen. Work began at the end of last November and were executed to nearly 80%.

Spain, as a principal partner of the DINEPA, regrets that, due to claims on land policy (property), it was terminated unilaterally to the construction of that station. The Embassy of Spain is seeking the intervention of the Government of the Republic of Haiti to release this situation, so that people can receive this assistance.

It is necessary to recall that Spain has redoubled its support to the DINEPA after the earthquake of January 12, 2010 and the declaration of the cholera epidemic, by providing immediately available funds and technical and logistical support. The paralysis of the station of Titanyen is a bad news for the proper conduct of this cooperation.
