Haiti - Security : Former President Privert feared for his life...
Following the decree issued on 19 July https://www.haitilibre.com/docs/Moniteur-19-juillet-2017-Chef-de-lEtat-et-BRICIF.pdf taken at the instigation of the Minister of Economy Jude Alix Patrick Salomon, signed by President Moïse, Prime Minister Lafontant and members of his government, reserving henceforth the privileges granted to the former Heads of State, only to those who were Elected by universal suffrage https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21575-haiti-news-zapping.html former President Jocelerme Privert, strongly reacted and wrote the Minister of Justice Heidi Fortuné, pointing out that this measure now deprives the former head of state of a security team supported by the public treasury and put his life and that of his family in danger.
Excerpts from his letter to the Minister of Justice :
"[...] The Moïse administration, taking the irrational decision to limit these privileges exclusively to the former heads of State elected by direct universal suffrage, assumes the heavy and hazardous responsibility of a breach of security, previously available to former President Jocelerme Privert under applicable laws and regulations.
[...] Jocelerme Privert, faced with the threat to his life, that of his family and his closest collaborators, the implementation of the aforementioned decree, can not refrain from including this unfair measure in Dark letters to the record of the administration of President Jovenel Moïse and Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant, especially since it clearly participates in an unhealthy and incomprehensible undertaking of persecution and political revenge [...]
[...] Jocelerme Privert, appeals to the sense of the responsibility of your Ministry which supervises the National Police of Haiti, in order to instruct the Director General of this institution in charge, Article 269-1 of the Constitution, of the protection of the life and property of citizens, to adopt, in strict application of the laws of the Republic and the prescriptions of the mother law, all necessary provisions, so that its safety, in his capacity as former constitutional President of the Republic in accordance with Article 149.1 of the Constitution, be guaranteed at all times..."
