Haiti - Agriculture : Goat recovery in the South only 30% of the promises made

In November 2016, a month after Hurricane Matthew, a call for contribution was launched by a consortium of Haitian institutions and associations to allow peasant families to rebuild part of the goat population lost. The target was to reach 5,000 families in the affected areas with 10,000 goats. 1 million US dollars, had to be mobilized for the purchase of goats (male and female), beneficiary training, veterinary care, mini enclosure construction and cuttings for forage production.

Today, if US $ 950,000 has been promised (Swiss Cooperation in Haiti, French Foundation, Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), Collectif Haiti de France and many citizens and solidarity organizations), only 300,000 (US dollars) have actually been disbursed or incurred to date.

Nevertheless, the funds committed helped 1,625 families in the communes of Chardonnières, Port-à-Piment, Roche à Bateau and Côteaux in the department of the South;

  • 1,657 goats and 33 improved male goats were bought and distributed (a hundred goats have already made small) ;

  • 1,313 breeders were trained and sensitized on improved goat breeding ;

  • 820 families have already received 2 goats or the funds to buy them ;

  • 412 shelters/pens were built ;

  • 150 kg seeds of moringa and 100 000 forage cuttings were distributed to beneficiaries ;

  • The animals were dewormed and identified with earrings and a notebook.

Recall that goats are distributed as a loan repayable in kind, every small goat refunded (goat male or goat) per beneficiary farmer will be given to another breeder (second-generation recipient). With 2 adult goats ready to breed, a family can have 4 to 6 goats in the first year. A family that has increased its herd to 4 goats can expect annual incomes 3 to 4 times higher than the initial investment.

The next contributions should make it possible to reach in the months to come several other communes of the South Department, the majority of the communes of the department of Grand'Anse and some other communes of the departments of the West, North-West and South-East.
