Haiti - Elections : Meeting of the OAS with the Haitian authorities

José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), arrived today in Port-au-Prince, where he will meet President René Préval, Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive, the authorities of the Electoral Council Provisional (CEP) and the Chief Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS-CARICOM, Colin Granderson. The purpose of this trip is to discuss with the highest authorities of the country on the conclusions and recommendations of the final report of the election, prepared by the Committee of Experts of the OAS.

Kenneth Merten, U.S. Ambassador to Haiti, announced last week that the coming of the Secretary General of the OAS to discuss with President Préval and the authorities concerned, "the recommendations" contained in the report submitted last Thursday to the Haitian Government. The Ambassador said that Insulza did not come to Haiti to change the recommendations of experts, or to negotiate.

Recall that the preliminary results of the disputed first round, published by the CEP, gave Mirlande Manigat winner, with 31.37% of votes, and Jude Célestin 22.48% followed in third place by Michel Martelly 21.48% (excluded from the second round).

However, experts from the OAS have reported in their audit report on the results of the first round, many frauds and irregularities and recommended in conclusion, that the government candidate, Jude Célestin be excluded from the second round in favor of the candidate Michel Martelly.
