Haiti - Economy : The EIB may provide loans for new projects

During his exploratory visit to Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21025-haiti-europe-european-investment-bank-on-exploratory-visit-to-the-country.html Pim van Ballekom, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), met with beneficiaries of EIB financing through local financial intermediaries and discussed the possibilities of financing new projects in Haiti "During my first visit to Haiti, we had fruitful discussions on how we would support future projects in the public and private sectors in Haiti. Given our extensive sectoral experience in support of projects around the world, we are able to bring technical and practical expertise to Haiti [...] The first EIB loans in Haiti date back to 1995 and we hope to continue to support projects Including for basic infrastructure (eg energy, water, sanitation and transport), climate action and small business support programs throughout the country."

Vincent Degert, Ambassador of the European Union, commented "One of the strengths of European aid is to target the most vulnerable and marginalized categories of the Haitian population. Indeed, women and small entrepreneurs in rural areas will be able to benefit from the funds that have so far been lacking under this agreement, in order to be able to recapitalize and, secondly, secondly to build up small-scale business structures that will enable them to acquire a minimum of financial autonomy and to take care of their families. This approach fits perfectly with our approach to cooperation, which aims to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable populations while improving their prospects for the future."

Let's recall that the EIB has already invested a total of 1.2 billion gourdes (± 16 million Euros) in loans and equity investments in favor of four projects related to private sector development (SMEs) . It also granted non-reimbursable aid of 45 million gourdes for the Médecins Sans Frontières modular traumatic surgical hospital built after the 2010 earthquake in Tabarre. Last year, following Hurricane Matthew, the EIB Institute, the Group's workforce and the EIB itself donated 19 million gourdes to six charities working to ensure the reconstruction of Haiti.
