Haiti - Sports : Launch of renovation works of the Olympic swimming pool

Friday, Régine Lamur, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Civic Action, took part in the launching ceremony of the renovation works of the Olympic pool of the Carrefour Sports Center. This launch follows the steps already taken by its predecessor Abel Nazaire, who signed a memorandum of understanding with the executive committee of the Haitian Federation of Aquatic Sports (FHSA), authorizing the renovation of the Olympic swimming pool.

It should be remembered that it is the only Olympic swimming pool in Haiti, built in the 1980s (the first Caribbean country to be endowed at the time with an Olympic basin) had become dysfunctional and abandoned after the fall of the Duvalier regime for lack of maintenance and of repairs.

During the ceremony, Dr. Evenel Mervilus, President of the FHSA welcomed the commitment of Minister Lamur to develop the swimming sector and the renovation of the Olympic swimming pool for the benefit of several thousand young people.

Dr Hans Larsen, President of the Haitian Olympic Committee (COH), Dr Abe Valentin CEO of Double Harvest, FHSA sponsor and Mayor of Carrefour, have each advocated the participation of everyone and the involvement of private sector in youth coaching and the development of sport in Haiti.

Minister Lamur reiterated her willingness to contribute to the development of swimming in Haiti and took the opportunity to congratulate the young people who represented Haiti during the international competitions despite a great deficit of adequate infrastructures including Mike Dorsainvil and Naomy Grand-Pierre at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-18643-icihaiti-sports-the-minister-nazaire-receives-the-olympic-swimmer-naomy-grand-pierre.html
