Haiti - Cholera : The International Community is reluctant to release funds for Haiti

Asked this week at a press conference on the progress of the financing of the $400 million fund-raising to fight against cholera and compensation for victims in Haiti, Sandra Honoré the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti recognised that the amounts received so far did not meet expectations. It should be said that since the $400 million appeal by former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and then the recall made by the new Secretary-General Guterres in January, the international community has released a total of less than 3% of the expected...

Sandra Honoré declared :

"[...] obviously you saw the appeal that was made by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in December 2016 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18970-haiti-health-un-creates-a-fund-to-fight-against-cholera-in-haiti.html and the reminder made by Secretary-General Guterres in January immediately after taking office, for the estimated financial resources to finance the two components of this new approach https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19550-haiti-politics-un-adopts-new-strategy-against-cholera-in-haiti.html

[...] I would say that the resources obtained so far do not meet expectations at this time [...]"

Note that as of March 30, 2017, the Trust Fund established to receive funds for the new Cholera approach in Haiti received a total of just over $ 2 million (2,666,746) from seven Member States as well as $ 15.901 from the UN Foundation. In addition, excluding the Trust Funds, Canada contributed C $ 6 million (± USD 4.6 million) and Japan for 300 million Yen (± USD 2.6 million).
