Haiti - FLASH : Army of Haiti, UN and Minustah will not contribute

Monday at a press conference, Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti and civilian Head of Minustah, questioned by a local radio station who asked her if it was not better than the Security Council passes a resolution to support the remobilization of the army in Haiti instead of a resolution that confirms a new mission https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20656-haiti-flash-bye-bye-the-minustah-hello-the-minujusth.html responded "[...] Yes, we admit that there is a debate in Haiti right now, regarding the reconstitution of the Armed Forces of Haiti, but this is a national debate right now and the Security Council simply took note of this national debate."

The Associated Press correspondent asked Sandra Honoré "The Haitian government said they absolutely need Haitian army to be reconstituted that the PNH it's not enough to maintain the security and they are asking for helicopters, for any kind of assistance. There UN have any intention or any plan for assisting the defense ministry to build up the Haitian army ?"

" Haitian government has in fact said that it intends to reconstitute a Haitian defense force. I have not heard that Haitian government says that the Haitian police is not up to the task [...] I would say that the UN and the Minustah in particular is not in a position to support or to contribute to this plan of the government of Haiti. It is a level of a national discussion about equipment... helicopters or other kind of assistance," responded Sandra Honoré, adding that the equipment of the Minustah did not belong to the UN but to each country contributing troops who, at the end of the mission, repatriated their equipment.
