Haiti - USA : Resumption of the deportations of Haitian convicts ?

According to U.S. authorities, the deportation of Haitians convicted for violent crimes who have already served their sentences in the United States, should be resumed this month. These deportations were suspended after the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

Several human rights organizations, including the Center for Constitutional Rights, Alternative Chance and The Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center (FIAC), filed an emergency petition with the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) to try to prevent the resumption of deportations to Haiti of the criminals, convicted in the United States.

These organizations stress that Haiti is in political crisis, the population living in insecurity in addition to being hit by a severe cholera epidemic that has killed nearly 4,000 people. These organizations consider that such deportations are irresponsible. They are asking the IACHR, to request to the U.S. authorities to not resume the deportations and to inform them on what basis these authorities decided to resume the process of deportation.
