Haiti - Education : Training on new standards for school infrastructure

From Monday 20 to Friday 24 March at the Montana Hotel, the Ministry of Education is organizing a training workshop on new standards for school infrastructure. Senior officials from the Ministry and Swiss Cooperation will participate in the opening ceremony.

This workshop, that targets all departmental and central engineers of the Ministry as well as local partners, should enable participants to have a better knowledge of the standards in force for the development and implementation of safe school infrastructure projects.

This initiative is part of a promotional campaign around standard plans for the construction of earthquake-resistant schools and para cyclonic.

It should be recalled that the model plans, complying with Ministry of Education standards and Ministry guidelines on the structural resistance of public buildings, were developed in a consultation process, initiated in November 2011 by a working group composed of the main actors involved in the reconstruction of public buildings, school infrastructure in Haiti.

These standard plans have been developed by Haitian and foreign professionals (architects and engineers) supported by earthquake engineering experts from a design office in Switzerland, which guarantee the conformity with standards, of technical solutions developed. The process of developing these plans also included verification of the solutions proposed by the construction of pilot sites in order to revise and optimize them.

Currently, the standard plans have been revised to facilitate their reading and additional building plans have been added to complement the construction of school complexes. Manuals have been developed to make it easier for companies to implement them, and more effective monitoring of quality control to ensure compliance and sustainability of school buildings.
