Haiti - Elections : No second round before February

Pierre-Louis Opont, Director General of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) said that the CEP will not be able to hold a second round of the disputed presidential election before February. "It will be materially impossible to hold the run-off on January 16, 2011 [...] from the date of the publication of the final results of the first round, we will need at least one month to hold the run-off".

Impossible to have more details on a date, since the CEP seems to ignore when the work of verification and recount of the first round, by the experts of the Organization of American States (OAS) will be completed. A calendar will be considered after the submission of the report of the OAS and the publication of final results.

Recall that the OAS experts began their work, Thursday, December 30, 2010 and that no information filter, as mentioned by Albert Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) "no public statement will be made during the process which will be held behind closed doors and that will end with the publication of a report, probably next week..."

It is highly probable that this declaration, made before the start of the Mission, had the sole objective to calm the spirits, by suggesting that it would take less than one week. So we must wait until the experts complete their tasks and hope that after the publication of the final results, Haiti will not fall into another period of disorder, which could add further delays.
