Haiti - DR : High tension at the border...

Saturday, a Haitian was arrested at the customs office of Dajabón while he concealed on his body many bundles of notes of different currencies, which were seized by the Dominican authorities.

Following this arrest, a crowd of Haitians in retaliation has retained several drivers of motorcycles and other vehicles of Dominican traders loaded with goods that were traveling on the road between Pedro Santana de Elías Piña and Dajabón to participate in a trade fair.

Two other trucks loaded with goods from the southern border were held by very angry Haitians armed with sticks and machetes who demanded the release of their compatriot and the restitution of the money seized, whose amount is unknown until now...

The Tenth Battalion of the Dominican Army of Dajabón had to intervene in order to disperse the crowd, to restore order and to recover the vehicles loaded with goods taken in hostage. At least two trucks have remained in the hands of Haitians.

Military reinforcements were deployed in the area due to Haitian protests spread along the international road.
