Haiti - Education : Study on reading, alarming results among students

At the Hotel Kinam was held the workshop on the return of the results of the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) study of students of the second year of the first cycle of basic education in Haiti.

The study was carried out on the basis of a representative sample, not only at the national level but also at the level of each of the 10 departments and stratified according to the sector (private, public) and the 9 categories of schools in the education system Haitian. The main objective of this study was to make a diagnostic assessment of school achievement.

Among the different results of the study, it can be seen that, on average, students in the reading test read correctly only 20 words per minute in Creole and 18 words per minute in French.

These alarming national performances despite the government's efforts are very far from the correct reading skill of 45 words per minute Which is recognized as the benchmark average for similar studies in developing countries and the regional average for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The results of this study constitute an important tool not only in the formulation of educational policies for teaching and learning but also in the implementation of the new Operational Plan 2015-2021.
