Haiti - Education : 4% of schools across the country, damaged or destroyed

Following the passage of Hurricane Matthew Haiti on 3 and 4 October, the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC), has published a new status report conducted between 13 and 21 October.

According to this last report, 774 schools have been affected at the Matthew passage, slightly more than 4% of the 17.828 schools surveyed across the country (Statistical Yearbook 2013-2014 of MENFP). Eight out of ten departments are affected by the damage, with the exception of North and Northeast.

Number of school-affected by department :

Grand'Anse : 217 school out of 786 ;

South : 171 out of 1,451 ;

Nippes : 228 out of 744 ;

South East : 33 out of 1,143 ;

West : 22 out of 6,213 ;

Artibonite : 26 out of 2,445 ;

Centre : 4 out of 1,406 ;

North West : 73 out of 1,134.

Respectively, 31% and 28% of pre-school, fundamental and secondary school of Nippes and Grand'Anse are either destroyed or damaged. To date, 8 schools have been rehabilitated.

Alongside an evaluation mission, already on the ground, which identifies and quantifies the affected schools, another mission is at work, including representatives of the academic engineering for technical assessment of the buildings concerned.
