Haiti - FLASH : The Haitian Government in favor of the extension of mandate of the Minustah

Tuesday, following the latest report of the Secretary General of the UN on the Minustah that recommends to extend for 6 months the mandate of the Mission https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18555-haiti-flash-towards-an-extension-of-mandate-of-the-minustah.html , Ambassador Denis Régis, the Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations took the floor to the Security Council and spoke in favor of the extension. About the possible presence in the longer term of the Minustah in Haiti, he says that the Government is in favor of sending, after the election of a strategic assessment mission.

Excerpts from the statement by Ambassador Denis Régis :

"[...] On the security plan, the Government considers that in the current context, the support of the Minustah to the National Police of Haiti to strengthen the climate of security essential to the success of the electoral process, remains crucial. That's why it notes with the best interest of the recommendation made by the Secretary-General 'to extend the mandate of MINUSTAH for an additional six months, until 15 April 2017'.

[...] With respect to a longer-term presence of the Minustah, the Government is in favor of sending, after the election of the strategic assessment mission, whose principle has already been agreed. It is well understood it will be up to the next government emerges from the elections to define jointly with the Security Council members the terms of reference of the future Mission and the outline of the new configuration.

Nevertheless, we believe it useful to recall the principled position of the Government on the current transition plan of the Minustah as well as the profile of the future mission, which must take full account of the evolving situation on the ground. The smooth conduct of forthcoming elections should be in this respect a key indicator regarding the prospects of stabilization and medium-term needs and long-term security.

[...] In the immediate future and in connection with the electoral process, we support the efforts of the Department of Peace Operations to the contributing countries to fill the current shortfall of 250 police officers and reach the authorized level of 951 members"
