Haiti - Elections : Patrick Leahy suggests action against the Haitian government

Following the preliminary results of elections in Haiti, this November 28, the U.S. Government has expressed its concern about the many irregularities and fraud reported. The spokesman for the State Department, Philip Crowley, declared about it Wednesday that the Washington government was concerned about the "contradictions" in the preliminary results, while reaffirming U.S. support for Haiti.

"As if Haiti did not have enough problems, now, once again, those in power there are trying to subvert the will of the people." said in a press release, Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy Leahy, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on The State Department and Foreign Operations, which handles the Senate’s work in funding foreign assistance, including aid to Haiti, and the State Department’s budget. Leahy also chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, which handles immigration policy issues.

He said that the U.S. should support the right of the Haitian people to "choose their leaders freely and fairly" in the electoral process to obtain a "legitimate government respected by the Haitian people and recognized by the international community", adding that "by suspending direct aid to the central government and visas for top officials and their immediate family members, the United States would be sending that message" and this until necessary steps are taken to ensure a fair and democratic outcome to the elections held on November 28, 2010.
