Haiti - Sports : Our athletes paraded proudly to RIO 2016

For its 15th participation since 1924, Haiti was represented by 10 athletes, who paraded proudly Friday, with the wrestler Asnage Castelly head, as flag bearer https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-18234-icihaiti-rio-2016-the-wrestler-asnage-castelly-flag-bearers-for-haiti.html at the Opening of the 31th edition of the Olympic Games taking place in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro (RIO 2016).

Women of the Haitian delegation in traditional costumes, designed by renowned stylist David Maëlle, a major figure of the Haitian fashion, gave a highly acclaimed show by the public.

Haiti has a long tradition of participation in the Olympic Games dating back to 1924, the year of his first when Haiti won a silver medal (per team) in the free shooting competition at 400, 600 and 800m. In 1928, Haiti participated in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam where Silvio Cator won a silver medal with a long jump of 7m58. Out of 14 Haiti's participation in the Olympic Games, Haiti won 2 silver medals (1924 and 1928) under US occupation.

Didier Hyppolite, the Minister of Tourism of Haiti and the Creative Industries, declared "The Ministry of Tourism is proud to Haiti's participation in the Olympic Games this year, and is wholeheartedly with the delegation" recalling that the costumes of the delegation, was courtesy of his Ministry in support to the Haitian Olympic Committee (COH).

For his part, Prime Minister Jean-Charles, said at the opening of RIO 2016 "The Nation stands as one behind our brave and worthy representatives who will be both representatives of a country

turned to sports and role models that could encourage vocations among younger.

On behalf of President Jocelerme Privert and members of the Government, the Prime Minister wished the greatest success and numerous medals at the Haitian delegation."

Our Haitian athletes enter into competition this week : Josué Deprez, 16th final (Monday, August 8), Boxing: Richardson Hitchins, super Weight lightweight men 64 kg, 16th final (Wednesday 10 August), Swimming: Mike Dorsainvil 50m freestyle Man series (Thursday, 11 August) and 50m woman free swimming: Naomy Grand'Pierre series (Friday, August 12).
