Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : Latest assessment, 1 case every 56 seconds

We will post as of today, the assessment of the situation on the cholera epidemic in Haiti, every 5 days, in a new formule to facilitate reading and to monitor progress more easily . Note that all these assessment come from the official reports of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP).

The major humanitarian organizations (MSF, MDM, ICRC etc...) and the world health organization (WHO, PAHO, OCHA, etc...) recognize that the assessments are largely undervalued and not reflect reality. However, it seems difficult, according to many experts, to have an accurate reading of the situation, given the difficulties of access to many areas in Haiti and the lack of human resources.

Period from November 26 to November 30, 2010 (5 days)

Assessment at the national level

CASES SEEN (Cholera patients)

Nov. 26 68,056 (1)

Nov. 30 75,727 (1)

7,671 Cholera patients were seen during this period

1 person every 56 seconds

CASES HOSPITALIZED

Nov. 26 30,300 (1)

Nov. 30 34,208 (1)

3.908 people were hospitalized during this period

1 person every 110 seconds

DEATH

Nov. 26 1,721 (1)

Nov. 30 1,882 (1)

161 people died during this period

1 person every 44 minutes

Port-au-Prince and metropolitan area: (2)

(Port-au-Prince: Carrefour, Cité Soleil, Delmas, Kenscoff, Pétion-Ville, Port-au-Prince, Tabarre et Croix des Bouquets)

CASES SEEN (Cholera patients)

Nov. 26 10,520 (1)

Nov. 30 11,852 (1)

1,332 Cholera patients were seen during this period

1 person every 5 minutes 24

CASES HOSPITALIZED

Nov. 26 3,485 (1)

Nov. 30 4,103 (1)

618 people were hospitalized during this period

1 person every 6 minutes 54

DEATH

Nov. 26 136

Nov. 30 181

45 people died during this period

1 person every 2 hours 40 (1)

(1) These figures are cumulative from the first report published by the MSPP, October 31, 2010. Recall that the epidemic started in Haiti on October 19, 2010.

(2) Note that since the November 26 MSPP has not updated the community deaths (1 death more ...) and deaths in hospital on November 28 and 29, which gives a false impression of the situation. We do not know why the numbers of Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, largely undervalued are "manipulated".
