Haiti - Epidemic : UN collected 20.06% of emergency aid to fight against the cholera !

Humanitarian needs, to cope with the cholera epidemic in Haiti are still important, said Tuesday the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The United Nations (UN) has appealed for emergency funds near its member countries, amounting to 164 million dollars to fight against the cholera epidemic rampant in Haiti. Until now the response is insufficient to effectively fight against the epidemic. On the 164 million requested by the UN and its partners, to fight against the disease, $32.9 million (20.06%) have been collected to date.

There are currently in the country, 40 cholera treatment centers, averaging between 100 and 200 beds each, and 61 processing units, with an average of 20 beds each.

Despite this important infrastructure, "still more to be done and humanitarian partners must continue to work to increase the number of beds," said to the press, OCHA spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs, in Geneva, Swiss "A study conducted by the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population with 37 partners identified the key challenges in the fight against cholera, notably the management of corpses, waste treatment, identifying sites on which to establish health facilities and the lack of trained staff," she added.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) published on November 29, 80.860 people have been infected by cholera, 36.207 had to be hospitalized and 1.817 died of the disease.
