Haiti - Education : Master of physics, a reality in Haiti

The Caribbean Bureau of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) welcomes the establishment of the first Master of Physics in Haiti. About 30 Haitian students come mostly from the École Normale Supérieure and the Faculty of Sciences of the State University of Haiti are following this second cycle of training in Physics, specialty Energy and Environment at the École Normale Supérieure ( ENS) of the State University of Haiti (UEH).

Recall that it was in October 2015, that the ENS/UEHhosted the first promotion of Master program in Physics, Energy and Environment course, developed in partnership with the University of Poitiers, University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, UWI and the National School of Public Works of the State with the support of the AUF. Before this program, physical trainings in Haiti were limited to the License.

This master, Energy and Environment oriented, aims not only to fill gaps in teaching physics in Haiti, but also to train researchers capable of responding to major issues of the environment and energy in Haiti.

Classes are taught by a team of teachers primarily came from France, but also of Guadeloupe. The Master welcomes fifteen teachers, including 90% from outside. Most teaching assignments are funded by AUF but also three fellowships for the benefit of Haitian teachers in French universities. The goal, ultimately, says the Head of the Master, is that Haitian teachers take over. Note that several financial partners are also involved alongside the AUF in supporting this training, which the Haitian government, the Embassy of France in Haiti and the Conference of University Presidents (CPU).

"Physics is a strategic discipline that has often led to the development of new technologies [...] Investment in the development of physics is a sign of the dynamism of a country because the economic and social progress is now linked to innovations technology. It is necessary and even vital for Haiti to invest in the development of physics and all the basic sciences to advance scientific research in Haiti. We need to provide training and research in physics at all levels of Haitian youth," stressed ieuseul Prédélus, Master Manager.

The Master program in Physics will recruit soon the second promotion of the Master 1 and the first cohort of students in Master 2.
