Haiti - Insecurity : The Dominican army deploys 250 elite soldiers

The Dominican Armed Forces have sent as reinforcements, 250 soldiers of the elite corps "Los Cimarrones", to improve security at the border with Haiti. This elite force's mission is to prevent, among other things: the illegal trafficking of persons, smuggling of goods, weapons, drugs, theft of livestock and vehicles.

The elite corps was greeted by General Rafael Florentino Perez, who commanded the Fourth Brigade of the National Army based in Mao Valverde. The senior military official explained that these reinforcements are part of the measures announced by the Minister of Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Joaquín Pérez Virgilio Félix.

In addition, General Florentino Perez, said that the military monitoring, at checkpoints at the border, will be further strengthened. He said that since the establishment of the military apparatus, trafficking of undocumented Haitian, was minimized.

A relative calm prevailed today on the border between the two countries after the incidents of Monday which wounded at least 7 Haitians during the violent clashes between protesters and members of the Haitian CESFRONT in Dominican Republic and between demonstrators and the forces of Minustah in Haiti.

Marciano Mateo Espinosa, Vice-Consul to the Dominican Ouanaminthe said about the evacuation [yesterday] of the Dominican consulate, that security measures will be implemented to allow the return of diplomatic staff.
