Haiti - Elections : Statements of Kenneth Merten around the report of the CIEVE

Questioned on the Voice of America on the report of the Independent Commission of Evaluation and Electoral Verification (CIEVE) Kenneth Merten, the Special Coordinator for Haiti at the State Department, declared he does not return to the United States to comment on the findings of this report, which is primarily a Haitian process, noting "We have always said we are concerned that the work of this Commission make more complicated and longer the electoral process. But if the people of Haiti is comfortable with the work of this Commission that not bother us [...] What we want is the completion of the electoral process in Haiti [...]"

Regarding a possible US financial assistance to the electoral process, the US diplomat said he did not yet know the position of the US Government on the report's recommendation to resume presidential election "[...] The American taxpayers have already spent over 33 million and is a lot. They will ask us what we achieved with that money or what guarantees that the same thing does not happen again ?"...

Kenneth Merten recalled that the most important is that the Haitian people can decide to whom it will entrust the country hoping that "On Monday we will know when the people will vote again. We await the CEP because it is not to the erification Commission to say how we should organize elections, but to the CEP. We hope it will indicate an early date in order to complete the process that began October 25, 2015 [...]"
