Haiti - FLASH : Torrential rains, floods, thousands of people affected

The combination of a tropical wave over the Caribbean Sea near the Bahamas Islands and an altitude trough at the passage of the wind, influences the current weather conditions and are the source of the recent heavy rains that battered Haiti on the night of May 26 to 27.

The West Department, was most affected in particular in the municipalities of Léogâne Arcahaie, Carrefour and Cité Soleil where a total of 2,901 homes were flooded and 3,674 affected families.

A young man of about twenty years is dead and three others injured, one seriously, in the collapse of a wall in Desmichel, Carrefour locality. The waters of Tesso, Mahotière and the river Froide also invaded the localities of Mahotière, Tesso, Desmichel, Akim, Erab and Texas, in the municipality of Carrefour.

Partial flooding was also reported to Linto 1 and 2, Ti Ayiti, Soleil 2-26, Drouillard projects in the commune of Cité Soleil.

In Léogâne, thundershowers on Thursday evening which continued up to Friday, May 27 in the morning, have caused flooding especially in the downtown. The waters of the river Rouyonne, in flood, won the area of the bus station on the street #9 of Malibu until the cemetery in Pont Vincent. The waters also rose : to the grand rue, he streets Lacroix, Lavandière, streey Noire, Sainte Catherine, Ka Da, Danpus, Baz africa, a part of Cité napoléon, Sabous, Cité Caleb, Cité Marcel, Nan Pandou, Bino Lapointe, Ça-ira and Cité Baussan, where in some place the water level rose to about 50 cm. This situation, in addition to blocking vehicle traffic in the center of Léogâne paralyzed traffic on the national 2.

In Arcahaie, the rivers Mitan, Courjolle have overflowed and flooded the localities of Ponce and Kafou Pois. mudslides were reported in Carriès and the village Williamson, partially affecting the national #1.

Rainfall and thunderstorms are still expected in the country until Monday.

The Civil Protection Directorate of the Interior Ministry reiterates its call for the population of areas at risk to remain vigilant and strictly implement the safety instructions in case of heavy rains and storms that can cause floods, landslides and mudslides.
