Haiti - Agriculture : FAO and CARICOM support once again Haiti

At the 34th Regional Meeting of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Mexico's success in the agricultural sector, which is placed fourth in the world in the production of beans, with 1.5 million tons was emphasized, while data concerning Haiti were described as cause for concern in terms of both agricultural production and distribution.

Quoting President a.i. Jocelerme Privert, which states that "food insecurity reaches about 3 million people in Haiti," Haitian Ambassador to Mexico Guy Lamothe, who represented Haiti at the meeting took the opportunity to request a new support from FAO.

"Food security is certainly one of the important components of agricultural policy of the country, but does not extend to the whole country," said Ambassador who stressed in his argument, that 40% of Haitian households and 25 % of children under 6 years were hit by chronic malnutrition.

Although the 34th meeting acknowledged the efforts in accompanying Haiti, participants with one voice, hoped that FAO strengthen further its support to the country. They recalled that it was important, given the particular case of Haiti, to establish broader assistance programs.

Moreover, CARICOM Ministers adopted a resolution in which they agree to work together on the problems of hunger, poverty and food security in Haiti by taking advantage of all resources in order to strengthen actions favorable to Haiti and the region, especially with the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IICA) and the Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI).
