Haiti - Epidemic : Spain sends 10 tons of additional medical aid

The Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI) has made a new shipment of 10 tons of medical supplies for people affected by cholera in Haiti, including, 88 million of aquatabs tablets that will be used to chlorinate 40 liters of water per family per day to cover the basic needs of drinking water for 2 million people for one month.

With regard to the support with the sector of Water and Sanitation, the response of Spain was carried out in collaboration with the National Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) in Haiti. Thanks to the Emergency Fund from the Fund for Cooperation for Water and Sanitation (FCAS, its acronym in Spanish), which rises, since the period post-seism, to $2.5 million, and is intended for the emergency answer vis-a-vis possible crises, AECID donated to date 11.5 million water purification tablets to the Haitian Government, 7.8 tons of HTH (chlorine powder), 46.810 boxes of soap and 2.200kg of oral rehydration serum.

The National Direction of Water Supply and Sanitation has distributed these materials between NGOs, municipalities and other local institutions so that those can in their turn distribute them free within the population to reduce the possibility of contagion and spread of cholera. It also guaranteed the purchase of water purification tablets in kiosks selling water to public and private Port-au-Prince.

Chlorine powder (HTH) provided by the Spanish Cooperation allowed chlorination and disinfection of wells, water reservoirs and distribution networks in all counties. It also allowed the disinfection of latrines and other places of discharge.

The assistance of AECID been made in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MSPP), the United Nations, PROMESS (Essential Drugs Programme) and NGOs.
