Haiti - Epidemic : Cuba sends medical reinforcements

Cuba provided medical assistance to Haiti for over 10 years, its numbers were increased immediately after the earthquake and there are around 855 Cuban doctors on the ground, part of which is dedicated to the fight against the cholera epidemic .

Despite the active presence on the ground of the Cuban brigade and staff dedicated to the fight against cholera, (118 doctors, 78 nurses and 56 other people - laboratory technicians and medical staff trained in Cuba), plus important human resources of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and Partners in Health, Artibonite and North West have a need for more medical partners on the ground.

Cuba decided to send more medical personnel in Haiti to deal with the epidemic of which the last official assessment, mention 14.642 hospitalization and 917 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic.

A team of Cuban doctors, nurses and specialists in epidemiology are arrived as reinforcements Saturday in Port-au-Prince. This team will reinforce the Cuban staff already on the ground. A new entrant said that the Cuban team had come to support the Haitian population, and will remain there as long as necessary to overcome this epidemic.
