Haiti - Reconstruction : Inauguration of socio-community infrastructures in Cité Soleil
Thursday the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, accompanied among others of Ministers of Planning and External Cooperation, Yves Germain Joseph, Public Works, Transport and Communications, Mr. Jacques Rousseau, and Economy and Finance, Mr. Wilson Laleau, proceeded to the inauguration of the socio-community infrastructures projects of Wharf Wharf Jérémie, in the commune of Cité Soleil.

This is a modern complex which cost 23.9 million US dollars, extending over 7 hectares, including a center of technical and vocational training, with 16 classrooms, 4 workshop blocks, an auditorium with a capacity of 600 seats and a basketball court, a market which can accommodate 1,340 merchants, a sub-police station with police dormitory, offices housing the National Port Authority (APN) and the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH), sanitary blocks, tanks and car parks. A public beach and relaxation areas are also built on the seafront.

The Head of State believes that with these new installations, the Wharf Jérémie is now able to fully play its pivotal role in the economic and social development of Haiti, offering a leisure space, trade, of technical and vocational training and sports practice to the inhabitants of Wharf.

"Since my childhood, this is the first time a government makes such a project in the city. Before the area was used as a landfill, today is a center of attraction," rejoiced a sexagenarian who participated in the ceremony.

Started in November 2013, construction work in Wharf Jérémie fall within the scope of the various actions taken by the Administration Martelly, who for five years has started to provide the country with a set of infrastructure to improve competitiveness and facilitate its development. The rehabilitation of the Port of Cap-Haitien, the construction of the Port of Petit-Goâve, the North Quay of the Port of Port-au-Prince, the construction of the Unit of Port of Cabotage of Jérémie and of La Saline are part.

Satisfied with the positive changes implemented under the leadership of his presidency, the President Martelly urges people to make good use of new infrastructure and encourages all sectors to undertake initiatives to change both, our image, our economy and our life of people.

"My thanks also go to the people of Wharf Jérémie who voluntarily cooperated in this project. 323 families have voluntarily dismantled makeshift shelters or houses built of blocks, to allow the implementation of this project. 298 of them benefited from a support of 16/6 program to relocate. Pthers still waiting for the MPCE fulfills its part of the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed three years ago, for the reconstruction of 20 units housing, with their representatives, I want to name the Council of Notables of Cité Soleil (CONOCS). I want to assure them today that this will be done shortly," declared the Minister Yves Germain Joseph.
