Haiti - Epidemic : Port-au-Prince, 278 confirmed cases, 10 dead

Dr. Jon K. Andrus of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said in a press conference "We expect a very rapid spread, even explosive, of this epidemic," stating that it was impossible to predict at present, the magnitude of the evolution of the epidemic because many people infected do not seek medical attention.

For Dr. Jon K. Andrus, sanitary conditions in Port-au-Prince are very bad and represent the optimum conditions for rapid spread of cholera. Moreover, the hygiene conditions in overcrowded refugee camps, suggest a worsening of the epidemic.

The situation in numbers:

Since the 73 initial cases confirmed on November 10 (situation of November 7), the number of hospitalized increased to 278 in the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) published Today (situation of November 9) an increase of + 380%

The evolution from the official reports of the MSPP (175 cases, situation of November 8) and today's report (278 cases situation of November 9) shows an increase of +59%.

Death toll increased from November 7 to 9 from 1 to 10

Capital Port-au-Prince :

In the capital alone, the first official assessment of MSPP showed 39 cases hospitalized (situation of November 8) and 99 cases in today's report (situation of November 9) an increase of +253%
