Haiti - Tomas : Relief, continue to organize 09/11/2010 11:14:22
According to the latest official assessment, Tomas has caused 21 deaths, including 7 in the department of Grand Anse and 36 wounded. 9 people are missing. With that are added some 1.004 houses were destroyed and 5.336 others damaged. Through the territory, 6.610 affected families are counted. Civil protection and its partners could evacuate 48.235 people and 24.212 are today in provisional shelters. Among the most affected cities, the Gonaives. Peacekeepers and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have supported government efforts in the evacuation of 3,000 IDPs in a camp near the camp informal Corail Cesse-lesse. The evacuees are temporarily housed in a hospital and a church in Croix des Bouquets. In the Southern Department, MINUSTAH has supported the evacuation of 2.762 people to temporary shelters arranged by IOM and NGOs. 1.512 evacuees come from Les Cayes. In the Artibonite, the military and UNPol supported PNH in the transfer of 210 prisoners of Gonaives to detention centers of Saint-Marc (100), Mirebalais (62) and the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince (48). Across the country, 6.442 peacekeepers have also conducted many humanitarian operations such as medical care, distributing food rations and 99,000 liters of drinking water. Actions which saw the involvement of 6.442 peacekeepers. Food distributions are also conducted in the Great South, Port-au-Prince and Gonaives by the World Food Programme (WFP). In these areas, WFP has distributed food rations to more than 9,000 people.
