A global coalition of funders, led by CEO and Founder of J/P Haitian Relief Organization Sean Penn and including Ségolène Royal, French Ministry for ecology, sustainable development and energy, business, and NGOs committed to reforest Haiti over the next ten years through an initiative called, "Haiti Takes Root" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15306-haiti-environment-common-front-with-france-for-the-reforestation-of-haiti.html

Sean Penn, Ambassador-at-Large for Haiti, announced the project in Paris during the COP21 climate change talks at a special reception at the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, hosted by Minister Ségolène Royal Minister for the Environment and head of the French delegation at COP21. The event was attended by global influential figures across politics, business, NGOs, fashion, entertainment, media and the environment.

Haiti Takes Root’s ambition is to providing a long-term sustainable future for the people of Haiti, through the reforestation of woodlands, which have been disseminated as a result of the country’s humanitarian and economic challenges. Like the rural poor world-over, Haitians need to burn wood for fuel, to cook, to boil water.

The goal of Haiti Takes Root is to restore the productivity and ecological services of the land by reestablishing tree cover, ultimately improving the economy, livelihood and natural habit of Haiti, as well as making it more resilient to damaging effects of climate change. Haiti, according to the World Bank’s own measures, is one of the poorest countries in the world, and which has been reduced to only 2% forest nation wide.

Commenting on the initiative, Sean Penn declared "I've been working on the ground in Haiti with people who are heroic to me. This is our chance to help these heroes. We must take this historic opportunity at a time when the world is focused on addressing climate change, and give the people of Haiti the chance to rebuild their country.”

Minister Royal declared "Haiti Takes Root is a perfect example of COP 21 Paris in Action. We are very proud of this new partnership to help the people of Haiti lift themselves out of poverty through the reforestation of the country."
