Haiti - Environment : 5 priority major challenges for Haiti

Haiti submitted since 30 September, its national contribution (CPDN). This document sets the direction on which will be based the actions of the Haitian State in the next fifteen years to adapt to climate change and reduce by 31% its gas emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) compared to a trend scenario, by 2030. With this effort, Haiti will remain one of the least emitters country. The implementation of CPDN of Haiti requires a total budget of 25.387 billion USD over the period 2016-2030.

In preparation for the COP21, upcoming United Nations climate conference held in Paris from 30 November to 11 December 2015, the Platform of Civil Society on Climate Change (PSC-CC) and the ONGHaïti Coordination Committee (CCO-Haiti) expressed their support for the Contribution Expected Determined at the National level (CPDN) submitted by the Haitian government.

The PSC-CC and NGOs from CCO-Haïti support and engage with the government facing the five major issues identified as priorities by the Haitian government, in consultation with civil society and the private sector, namely :

  • Integrated water resources management and watershed ;

  • The integrated coastal zone management and infrastructure rehabilitation ;

  • The preservation and strengthening of food security particularly through the development of bio economy ;

  • The energy transition to reduce dependence on fossil fuels ;

  • Information, education and awareness on the causes and effects of climate change and adaptation strategies.

Note that according to the list of Heads of State to intervene Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, President Martelly should do his intervention in the afternoon.
