Haiti - Literature : Dany Laferrière made a donation to the Quebec-Haiti Exchange program

In 2014, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec concluded an agreement with PEN (Poets, Essayists and Novelists) Haiti in order to strengthen the links between Quebecois and Haitian writers. This agreement took the form of a Quebec-Haiti Exchange program and in-country workshops for writers.

The program allows for an author from Quebec to conduct a six-week residency at the Maison des écrivains de Georges Anglade (House of writers of Georges Anglade), in Port-au-Prince and a Haitian writer to conduct a six-week residency in Montreal to benefit from professional contacts for the development of their careers.

Dany Laferriere donated $ 25,000 to this program, which comes from the surplus of subscriptions received for his induction in the French Academy. This financial contribution complemented the grants given to writers who participate in this exchange program. In addition to the $ 4,000 accommodation grant, each writer, Haitian or Quebecois, will receive a $ 1,000 assistance grant to help him participate in workshops and get literary works from others authors originated from the place of his residency.

Learn more about the Quebec-Haiti Exchange program and in-country workshops for writers :

Wishing to participate in the effort of the Government of Quebec to strengthen ties with Haiti, the CALQ in 2014 concluded a reciprocal agreement with the Centre PEN Haiti. This agreement was also part of the continuity of links developed between the Union of Quebec Writers (UNEQ) and the Haitian literary community of Quebec and Haiti. It allows a Québec author to conduct a six-week residency at the House of writers Georges Anglade, in Port-au-Prince and a Haitian writer to conduct a six-week residency in Montreal to enjoy the many possibilities of professional contacts conducive to the development of their careers. A special feature of this program is the focus on cultural mediation: the selected writers are invited to participate in activities such as public readings, lectures in schools and discussions organized in order to make contact with the public.
