Haiti - Social : 16 days of activities against gender violence

Wednesday on the occasion of the World Day against violence against women, the UN team has launched a 16-day program of activities, which invites us to reflect on the role of women as key actors in development economic and not just as beneficiaries of social protection programs.

The UN team in Haiti recalls that all social actors are responsible for promoting gender equality and encourages Haiti's efforts to eradicate gender violence, improving women's access to equal education, services health and quality employment, as well as to enhance their participation in the institutional, economic and political life. On this latter point, note that Haiti remains one of six countries in the world, whose one of the parliamentary chambers (the Senate) has no women representation and that in Chamber of Deputies, the ratio is 5 women to 95 men, while the Haitian Constitution of 1987 established the principle of quota of at least 30% women.

The United Nations, also support Haiti in reforms designed to give women equal rights to economic resources, and access to ownership and control of land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance and natural resources . Note that in Haiti, 71% of women have neither land nor house; 20% own a property jointly and only 9% are owners.

The orange color will again be the symbol that will dresses events and UN buildings in the world and in Haiti to reaffirm their support to advance the gender equality as a crosscutting element in the agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (ODD) by 2030 and in particular for achieving the SDGs #5 : "Achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls."

This program offers a variety of activities include: film screenings, seminars of accompanying to ictims of violence, drama in schools, training to the Civil Prison for Women of Pétion-ville by volunteers, promoting the recruitment of women in the National Police of Haiti (PNH), discussions with young people and a football match between a United Nations team and the National Women's Selection sub-16.
