Haiti - Environment : Common front with France for the reforestation of Haiti

Monday at the French Mission to the United Nations in New York on the sidelines of the 70th UN General Assembly, Lener Renauld, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominique Pierre, the Minister of the Environment, Segolene Royal, the French Minister of Ecology, Fernando Sulichin, Sean Parker, Phillip Caputo and Sean Penn proceeded in the presence of French President Francois Hollande and the French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, to the signing of a declaration of intent for the execution of a major reforestation project in Haiti.

This initiative entitled "Haiti Takes Root", to which joined Sean Parker (co-founder of Nasper and former President of Facebook) marks a major turning point in the fight against deforestation in Haiti and is part of the 21st Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of 2015 (COP21 / CMP11) to be held in Paris from November 30 to 11 December 2015 in the context of a new international climate agreement.

In her speech, Ségolène Royal said that the signing of this agreement occur in the wake of multiple major natural hazards that Haiti has suffered in recent years, which accelerated soil erosion and deforestation.

The Parties welcomed the usual contribution of the organization of Sean Penn (J/P HRO) as well as this project that will bring together all public and private initiatives.

France will also provide its expertise in the framework of this project, through the National Forestry Office, the French Development Agency and technical coordination on the ground.

In his speech the Haitian Chancellor Renauld on behalf of the Head of State and Government of Haiti, welcomed the project and took the opportunity to thank the French partners in this important initiative recalling that "[...] for this planet, there is no plan B [...] it remains important to make every effort to preserve our forest cover for future generations."
