Haiti - Epidemic : Spain mobilizes

Monday, Soraya Rodriguez, Secretary of State for International Cooperation led a coordination meeting with officials of humanitarian aid and NGOs working in Haiti to coordinate the actions of the Spanish cooperation system.

In close coordination with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in Port-au-Prince, the Government of Haiti and the United Nations, the Office of the Humanitarian action of the AECID answered a call launched Friday by the Pan-American Organization of health (OPS) for immediately facing the medical crisis in Haiti by déloquant 100.000 euros of the Spain-OPS Funds.

This fund has enabled the immediate mobilization of a team of experts (specialists in infectious diseases, epidemiologists, medical personnel, etc.) that was able to confirm the diagnosis and the presence of the epidemic.

In addition, the team provided preliminary support for the government of Haiti in the treatment of patients and prevent the spread of the disease by sending specific drugs (sera rehydration) and experts in water, wastewater treatment, water purification and safety information hygiene practices.

The AECI has also enabled 2.5 million euros from the emergency fund already planned epidemiological outbreaks and is managed by the IDB as emergency assistance to the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation in Haiti. These funds were used, among others for immediate purchase and transport from Jimani (Dominican Republic) of 2 tons of HTH (chlorine powder) and distribution of soap, water purification equipment and 24 million of Aquatabs (tablets for purifying water). Each tablet can purify about 4.5 liters, which means there are enough tablets to purify 108 million gallons of water.
