Haiti - Social : Firing tear gas at the border

Monday afternoon, the Dominican Government has begun strengthening the military patrols along the 372 km long border with Haiti to prevent entry of persons who may be infected with cholera. Just hours after the closure of the border, the UN peacekeepers had to use tear gas to disperse a large crowd waiting to cross the border city of Dajabon, northwest of Haiti.

President Leonel Fernandez announced the decision to temporarily close the border after a meeting with ministers of the Armed Forces, Virgilio Perez, and Public Health, Bautista Rojas. The Dominican government also said it had the resources necessary to prevent the disease from entering the country. This closing started to be put in place this morning around 8am.

The implementation of a sanitary quarantine along the border in collaboration with the Haitian authorities has been announced.
